While previously steel and cast grids and racks were used, today charging systems made from carbon fibre composites are the number one choice. The high load capacity, combined with tensile and flectional resistance are the decisive arguments for the use of carbon materials, which come into their own in automated processes.

The low density and the light weight of C/C make handling much easier and also ensures an excellent energy balance compared to steel or cast frames. We produce and supply graphite and C/C components for the following applications:

Vacuum furnaces: Plates and sections to protect the furnace chamber

GTD offers standard products for lining vacuum furnace chambers. Thanks to the use of C/C plates and sections, the sensitive, outer insulation is better protected against damages and thus, the service life of the furnace chamber is significantly extended.

Our standard products are usually available off-the-shelf. Thanks to a high level of availability, long furnace downtimes can be avoided in the event of damage to the existing insulation; thereby reducing operational costs.

Vacuum furnaces: C/C connection elements

C/C threaded bars, C/C nuts and C/C washers are particularly well suited as connecting elements for high temperature applications. Unlike heat-resistant metals, C/C is not susceptible to through hardening. Therefore, connecting element do not become brittle and thus have a considerably longer service life.

In addition to the standard sizes, we also produce customized countersunk screws, hammer head screws and many other  screw types; as well as  most types of threads, including UNC and UNF threads.

The physical properties of carbon fibre-reinforced carbon make it ideally suited for charging systems during high temperature heat treatment of steel in [vacuum furnaces]. The material boasts a high strength combined with little to no distortion of the charging system following many furnace cycles, and is thus ideal for use within these applications.

Furnace energy savings can be made due to the efficient heating and cooling times of C/C charging systems, when compared to standard steel fixtures. Further cost savings can be achieved thanks to shorter cycle times and considerably higher product loading densities; so that despite of higher initial procurement costs, the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) is reduced.

Automated charging systems during steel heat treatment


The use of C/C charging systems facilitates automatic charging for mass production as the racks retain their shape and geometry following hundreds of heating cycles. Due to the modular design of our C/C charging grilles, it is possible to find a unique and cost-efficient solution and meet all customer specific requirements.

GTD has long-standing experience in the development and design of charging systems and will find a solution for all applications.

For the most common vacuum furnace sizes, we have developed standardised grilles. A modular system for C/C grilles facilitates fast, flexible, cost-efficient and deformation-free charging systems.

Soldering – high temperature soldering

Due to increasing quality requirements, (flux inclusions) flux-less sintering at temperatures of up to 1100° Celsius has become more in demand in recent times. This process requires higher temperatures than conventional soldering with flux.

GTD develops and designs the most effective and cost-efficient solution to suit your individual requirements in the field of high-temperature soldering, i.e. soldering procedures in the automotive industry for components carrying fuel, water or gas, such as fuel injectors or oil/water coolers. Due to their stability at high temperatures, Graphite and C/C support systems can prevent component deformation during soldering, in both continuous inert-gas furnaces as well as vacuum furnaces.

Sintering – high stability and shape retention

There is an ever increasing demand to maintain component shape and dimensional stability during thermal sintering. To achieve this, component conveyors, charging systems and moulds must remain stable when exposed to high processing temperatures. For years, graphite has proven to be mechanically strong at such temperatures, as well as resistant to oxidation and thermal expansion. C/C is also ideally suited to sintering applications, thanks to its low brittleness and strong rigidity. The high strength-to-weight ratio of C/C helps to minimize material use and provides lightweight carriers with low thermal capacities.

WAFC is a high temperature resistant, non-brittle, all oxide ceramic matrix composite (OCMC) material, ideally suited for high temperature applications in high vacuum, in oxidizing or corrosive environments.

The material is produced by the company WPX Faserkeramik GmbH and originally marketed under the name WHIPOX®.

It is possible to realize not only standardized, semi-finished parts (sheets, grids, tubes) but also customer specific solutions (components, systems).

Soldering base and fixture

Soldering bases show negligible heat dissipation, yet maximum tolerance against point loading and temperature gradients.

Separators for C/C carriers

Grids and mesh structures separate the parts from C/C support structures, thereby preventing them from sticking and local Carbon contamination, and avoiding tedious and faulty coating procedures. They are warp free, thermal shock proof and allow automated rack loading.

Product carriers, charging racks

Heavy duty charging racks are very light weight and hence minimize energy loss. They are 100% oxidation resistant, and show no warping or deformation under load, or thermal shock failure under high pressure gas quenching. Their open grid structures facilitate heat flow and homogeneous temperature distribution.

Hybrid solution

The best combination of WAFC and C/C to secure products for bracing and hot pressing in high temperature atmospheres of vacuum furnaces without having contact reactions.

Refractory linings

Ceiling linings and sandwich structures protect against fibre insulation debris caused by high velocity.
